Recently, I was studying I John and was struck by a powerful promise God makes us regarding sin and confession.
I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
What an amazing promise.
If we confess our sins, God will 1) forgive us; and 2) purify us.
Confessing our sins is important.
I had a dream last night in which my friends Matt, Terry and I were standing outside of heaven. St. Peter told us that before any can enter, we had to pass through a muddy bog. All those who pass through sink in proportion to the amount of unconfessed sins they had when they died. Matt started out first and immediately began to sink. He struggled onward, and finally pushed to the opposite side, just as the mud reached his neck. He looked back, and saw Terry walking across, his shoes barely sinking into the mire. Matt said, “I can’t believe it. I never would have thought so you were so holy, Terry!” To which Terry replied, “Oh, I’m just standing on Arron’s shoulders.” Christians are sometimes guilty of letting what seems like little sins to go unconfessed and undealt with.
Yes, it’s important that we confess our sins to God.
He knows that we’ve sinned, so why do we need to confess them to Him? We need to confess our sins to Him for four reasons:
1) It reveals that we know that what we’ve done is wrong.
2) It reveals that we’re truly sorry for what we’ve done.
3) It reveals that we know who really has the power to forgive us of our sins.
4) It reveals that we know that God wants to forgive us of our sins.
Do you know that God has crazy love for us and wants to forgive us of our sins?
If you’re not a Christian, God wants you to leave the darkness, accept Jesus Christ—the Light of the World—as your savior, and find forgiveness of all of your sins.
If you’re already a Christian, all we have to do is confess our sins to him and He promises that we will be forgiven.
Do you believe that?
Do you believe that you can be forgiven of your sins?
It’s a promise!
Let’s start believing it, start confessing our sins to Him, and stop carrying around guilt for junk that God has already forgotten.
