About a month ago, a member of our mission team brought an idea to us for how we could raise money to help send our missions team to Guatemala. The missions team and I thought it was such a great idea that we are using it to raise money to help Journey Christian Church take some Epic S.T.E.P.S. before the end of 2010.
We’re in the midst of a series of messages on “Story” in which we’re challenging our people to find more meaningful stories by allowing God to write a better story for their lives.
We felt like the following effort was a chance for our people to take Epic S.T.E.P.S. in the area of missions.
The idea is to ask your people to bring in a foot-worth of quarters. If you lay quarters flat on a table, 13 quarters will measure exactly 1 foot, and 1 foot of quarters equals $3.25.
Last Sunday we launched an effort to change the world…one foot at a time! We told our people that we want them to bring in a mile’s worth of quarters which equals $17,160, but then I challenged the people of Journey to “go the extra mile” and bring in 2 mile’s worth of quarters which equals $34,320.
When this money comes in we’re going to distribute it so we can take the following S.T.E.P.S. (btw, for the past two years we’ve challenged every member of Journey to take the following spiritual S.T.E.P.S. every day, every week, and every year) before the end of 2010:
S…Service: Support our food program at John Evans IB Middle School
T…Teamwork: Send Missionaries from our church to Haiti this Fall.
E…Equipping: Send a Mission Team to Guatemala
P…Praise: Plant churches that will lead people to praise God!
S…Seeking: Local and International Outreach
We’ve challenged our people to make this a family effort. My kids are already collecting quarters and laying them out on the counter. For every foot of quarters a person collects they are given a paper foot that they can personalize or decorate and then return to us so we can place it on the walls of our church building.
We will line these feet up until two miles of paper feet are wrapped around our building.
When this effort is done on November 7th–and we’ve collected $34, 320 to change the world–and we combine this money with what we’ve already given away, we will have given over $60,000 to local and international efforts in 2010. Praise God!
I want Journey to be giving away $1 million a year by the year 2020 so I’m excited that we’re taking these great S.T.E.P.S. of faith in that direction.
I wanted to share this idea with you because I think it’s a fantastic way for Christians to change the world…one foot at a time!
